What Is Flannel? And Why Are Flannel Nightgowns So Soft, Warm, And Comfortable?

Flannel is usually a cotton or rayon fabric that is slightly napped on one or both sides to resemble woolen fabric.  The nap on flannel is like velvet – it lies flat whenever it’s brushed one way, but will stand up when brushed in the opposite direction. That’s why sometimes the fabric appears lighter or darker depending on the direction in which the fabric is brushed.

Flannel is perhaps the most comfortable, durable, and practical fabric available for sleepwear. For a flannel nightgown, you can find many wonderful designs and styles. There’s minimal shrinkage, they retain their shape, they wash well, and are wrinkle resistant. No wonder a flannel nightgown is on the wish list of every modern woman and girl!

Flannel is commonly used to make some dress goods, flannel sheets, blankets, comforters, and other bedding, coats, nightgowns, pajamas, baby items, etc. You’re probably most familiar with cotton flannel, but woolen and worsted flannels are also popular. There’s a synthetic flannel that is being manufactured as well.

Flannel was first made in Wales from short wool that was spun into cloth. The wool was spun into yarn, and the material was then woven.  The weaving of the yarn or carded wool is what makes wool so soft because the spun yarn is loose. Technically, woolen flannel was called flannelette and had a light nap to the material.

Because flannel was so easy to make, cheap to manufacture, and had the ability to keep people warm, it quickly became popular with the poorer class of people. They found the use of wool flannel a welcome item to fight the bitter winter cold.

Cotton flannel eventually became a more popular choice because of the ease of producing cotton and weaving the material. Wool is naturally flame retardant, but flannel made from cotton has a flame retardant added during the manufacturing process.
